Sun Microsystems, Inc. has launched a commercial version of its StarOffice 8, software that makes sharing office files such as spreadsheets or word documents compatible with three different operating systems.
The StarOffice 8 uses an Open Document Format that is compatible with Windows, Linux, and Solaris operating systems, and it is now making the format to more closely resemble Microsoft’s ubiquitous model.
“The StarOffice 8 software not only allows users to transparently read and write files in Microsoft Office formats, its new default Open Document file format ensures their data won’t be bound to a single product, now or in the future,” said John Loiacono, Executive Vice President, Software Group, Sun Microsystems.
The retail commercial cost for the software product is 62. The corporate packages are priced on a tiered, per-user basis, starting at 21.70/user and 15.50/user for upgrades. Educational users can obtain StarOffice 8 software without charge.
