SS&C Technologies’ chairman and CEO Bill Stone was handed the Lifetime Achievement award at Global Custodian’s Industry Leaders event last night, during an evening where the best in the fund administration, prime brokerage and custody industry were recognised.
Among the multiple-award winners were Pershing, Trident Trust, Ultimus Fund Solutions, BNP Paribas, Digital Asset and Morgan Stanley.
Stone’s Lifetime Achievement award recognised the significant impact the technology giant has had on the fund administration industry.
In his 30-plus year career, Stone has taken a company he founded in the basement of his Connecticut home and turned it into the fund admin behemoth it is today. In this year alone, Stone has led some of the biggest acquisitions in the industry including the $5.4 billion takeover of DST Systems and the $1.45 billion deal for Eze Software.
The dinner saw awards handed to the top prime brokers and fund administrators that have excelled over the year in the GC McLagan surveys.
BNY Mellon’s Pershing was awarded Prime Broker of the Year and also took home the award for best Prime Brokerage Operations, while Morgan Stanley was recognised for both Capital Introduction and Technology.
Ultimus Fund Solutions won three Mutual Fund Administration (MFA) awards, which included MFA of the Year, and Trident Trust won two for best Hedge Fund Administration (HFA) Client Service, and overall HFA of the Year.
The dinner saw the inclusion of several new awards, including Global Custodian of the Year which State Street took home, and Outstanding Fund Services Technology which was awarded to Northern Trust.
Global Custodian also recognised a number of innovations throughout the year that had made waves in terms of technological development in the securities services and asset servicing industry. Digital Asset was awarded for Innovation in Market Infrastructure Technology, Libra for Innovation in Digital Asset Post-Trade Technology, and SmartStream for Innovation in Collateral Management Technology. Opus and Maitland were also recognised for Fund Administration Processing and Client Experience respectively.
Morgan Stanley’s Gerry Rubin was the latest recipient of the Industry Legend Award for his 34-year career at the US investment bank, giving a moving speech upon receipt. In the final award of the night Digital Asset’s Kelly Mathieson was voted by attendees of the evening as the second North America Industry Person of the Year, following Northern Trust’s Peter Cherecwich in 2017. Mathieson topped an all-star shortlist featuring representatives from Broadridge, State Street and Northern Trust.
