Institutional investment by UK pension funds, insurance companies and unit and investment trusts seems to have fallen dramatically in the final quarter of last year. Figures published today by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) in London found total net investment by these institutions in Q4 2002 was 12.1 billion lower than the 24.1 billion recorded in Q3. Whilst investment in overseas securities was static at 5.7 billion, net investment in the UK equity market fell by 4.6 billion. Investment in other assets, such as non-government debt and real estate, actually turned negative as it shrank by 6.5 billion to net disinvestment of 0.2 billion.
